Feedback from participants on the wānanga
Rusti Rhiand
Iwi: Ngāti Maniapoto
Position: Registered Nurse, Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki
“The wananga had huge benefits for me as a nurse who deals with an average of 20 people a day – most of whom are on prescribed mediacation. I’ve been a nurse since 1971 and this wananga showed me that we can learn new things every day. I encourage all health workers, be they Maori or Pakeha, to take part.”
John Rabarts
Iwi: Ngāti Porou ki Heretaunga
Position: Secretary, Te Runanga o Hauraki
“The workshop was really empowering and increased my knowledge of how the pharmaceutical industry and government purchase of medicines work. As a result, I am trying to apply what I learnt, particularly in regard to the safety and disposal of medicines, among my fellow trustees, whanau and whanaunga.”
Amelia Peihopa
Iwi: Ngāpuhi
Position: Gout Maori Educator, Arthritis New Zealand
“I found the wananga to be a great refresher course. I learnt a lot of the content when I was in training, but it was great because it put me back in touch with the terms and how to articulate these to a lot of the people I work with. I run about three clinics a week in which I see 15-20 people who have serious gout issues, so I have been putting a lot of what I learnt into practice on the ground. I particularly enjoyed the section on Maori rongoa.
